Here I am going to help you guys in evaluating the growing complexities of India-Japan bilateral relationship. The thoughts are not mine, I am just compiling them. I have examined the editorials of TOI of 28 Aug, 29 Aug, 02 Sept and 04 Sept and completed this evaluation. _____________________________________________________________ International relationship theory assumes that interstate relations are shaped by impersonal forces, especially cold calculations of national interest. After the highly successful visits of Nepal and Bhutan, Modi’s Japan visit is going to have an important strategic shift in India’s policy towards “East Asia”. Modi surely wants take our look east philosophy to the next level, if this visit get the bull’s eye, we will be on the threshold of the success to diversify our look east philosophy. (A)Parallels between Modi and Abe:-- Modi and Abe both are ideological soul-mate, belong to 1950s generation, and share the zodiac sign of Virgo. Furthermore, both are conservative nationalists and pro-business reformers who promised to restore the national pride. Both were elected when their economies were puzzled. Moreover, Japs were fed up with their governing party like Indians were with congress. And both got clear-cut mandate. (B)What modi can learn from Abe:- Abe was elected almost a year before or so. He faced many setbacks in settling his county’s financial and political debacles. Midi can learn a lot from him. (1)Abe took the thorn with a detailed plan. At first, he decided to throw three arrows that are- --Monetary stimulus to kick starts the economy. --Structural reforms. --Small measures like lowering the taxes for small industries. So modi should think over this way of working. Without wasting time on erupting controversies, he should draw a pattern on which his govt is to be governed. He will have to take the bull by horns to prove his Modinomics right. (2)Abe has not been able to drive his ministers behind his plan. Modi should work on his legislature to prevent this failure. (3)Abe couldn’t fortify his third plan of lowering the taxes for small industries. Indian counterpart will have to think out this issue. (C)Why India needs Japan:-- Japan can play an important role in India’s transformation. Japan can provide us oodles of lollies and commercial technology to erect high quality infrastructure in India. Creation of an alternative supply chain system in Asia needs Japan’s help. Modi sees Japan as central to the success of India’s “look east-strategy”. Japan is a key part to help us in building smart cities. Japan is a leader in hardware sector. India has human capital and a huge market but no financial and technological power that Japan has. Indian boasts service-led growth while Japan has a solid heavy manufacturing base. Japan assisted China’s economic rise through large scale aid, investment and technology transfer for over three decades, in the same way it can help us becoming an economic powerhouse. (D)Why Japan needs India:- Tokyo looks Delhi as an important factor towards its own economic revival strategy. Relationship between Tokyo and Beijing has developed a change of scene since Abe ascended the throne. The dispute over the Diaoyutai / Senkaku Island has also contributed to the distortion of the distorted relationship. Moreover, labour costs too are arising in china, while in India it is immobile. To a large extent, Japan firmly banks on china for trade in rare earth metals. India too has a great deal of rare metals but doesn’t really know how to mine them in the best possible way. Japan has finance, technology and first class expertise in manufacturing and infrastructure sector on the other hand India has a young demography along with a vast market and a massive reservoir of human resource for Japanese business. Most important of all, India can play a pivotal role in expanding Japan’s security option beyond its current US-centric framework. Japan need close military cooperation owing to Abe’s reassertion of the right of collective self-defence and his relaxation of Japan’s self imposed arms export ban. After all India is the biggest recipient of the Japanese aid. (E)Why this entente is necessary:- Let’s assume that India, China and Japan make Asia’s strategic triangle and china represents side A (the longest side of the scalene triangle), India side B and Japan side C. the sum of the B + C will always be greater than A. In the absence of a Japan-India axis, china will dominate the entire Asian region that will have its own consequences.
