Here is a wonderful sighting captured by our guest while on drive with Ranger Nick! During the game drive Nick spotted a male lion close to the lodge by the river; much to the guests surprise they also spotted a female on the high ground a few meters away from the male. The poor lioness had been chased by the male who was trying to assert dominance. He chased her down into the river all the way to room 7. Just before she ran up the bank there was a bit of a fight, and that’s why she must have taken the high ground. The video is taken from after they fought. She then climbed the tree in an effort to get away from the male. He then left giving her an opportunity to escape, which she did by running through the camp and hiding under the deck of room 1. This is not unusual behaviour,as males will assert their dominance over new females. It is normally a violent confrontation, but very rarely does it result in permanent injury or even death. This was the first time these males had encountered the females outside of the boma. The following day Ranger Nick found her mating with the older male and they remained together for 2 days before splitting.
