Here is my answer to question number one; Do trikes stop quicker - TopicsExpress

Here is my answer to question number one; Do trikes stop quicker than motorcycles?.... NO THEY DONT!... But all is not lost, a trike under ideal conditions such as road conditions and operator experience is capable of stopping just as quick but not better. Having worked in the trike conversion business I got to see first hand how so many trike owners got the notion that trikes can out brake and out perform any motorcycle. I knew this was wrong because I rode these trikes everyday and worked on them. The owners got this misconception from non other than the trike dealer sales rep who who tell you anything to make that trike sale. Ask any trike owner why they put the trikes in the back of a group ride and they will say its because they can stop quicker and dont want a motorcycle to run into the rear of them!... A total myth. For years now since I was introduced to the trike world I was wanting to know the real answer to this controversial question. Then I saw that a friend of mine in Gwrra pondered the same question and decided to do some investigative research to find the answer. John Hoover is an engineering professor at OSU university in Stillwater, OK and a fellow CSC trike rider. His findings were published in two parts in Wing World magazine a couple years ago and the info was very very technical as only an engineer can write. At the end of his article, here in his own words is the conclusion of his findings; I do not believe a blanket statement can be made. After all, regardless of road conditions and rider conditions, the many trike variables along would preclude it. The sources necessary to collect sufficient data to definitively prove, or disprove whether trikes, in general, stop quicker than bikes would constitute a monumental undertaking. So, absent any conclusive evidence that a trike can, and will stop quicker than a bike counterparts, I contend that any real advantages of a trike over a bike in stopping on any road may be attributed more to the increased stability of a trike, rather than to an inherent ability of it to stop faster. Furthermore, given the variety of road conditions and variations amount vehicles, especially trikes, any substantive differences in braking will likely be more of a function of the rider than of the type of vehicle he or she is riding...... Whew!....
