Here is my latest email I sent this morning-10-15-13: Good morning!! Fall in slowly easing in and as we start to cool down, everyone needs to start thinking WINTER!! This said, there are many things to do to get ready for the winter months and here are a few: 1- winterize your car, 2- unhook your water hoses from your outdoor faucets, 3- stock up on a few extra groceries and bottled water as you can between now and those winter storms, 4- make sure you have warm clothing for the kids and yourself, 5- don’t forget the pets, 6- extra batteries you can hide from the kids so you can listen to the radio when all power is out, hopefully the radio stations have power!!. There are many other things you can do to prepare for winter. I would advise everyone to start doing this now so there isn’t such a rush on you when those storms get here. Pick up a copy of our Preparedness guide and it will help guide you through this process. TOMORROW, we will have our quarterly LEPC meeting. This stands for Local Emergency Planning Committee. Wednesday’s program will be the HAZMAT Team from Enid Fire Department. Most people don’t realize that we have special operation teams here in the city and county that can deal with these hazardous materials. This program should be very interesting and extremely informative. All Enid Area Disaster Planning Group Personnel are invited to this meeting too. Over the last several meetings, we have provided lunch but not knowing for sure how many folks will attend this particular meeting, we ask that you bring your own lunch and eat while we talk. The meeting will start around 12:30 and Enid Fire will start their program between 12:45 and 1 pm. Prior to their talk and demo, I will start this meeting with information on our up and coming tabletop exercise. This exercise will commence at 9 am on November 14 at the EFD training room located at 401 West Garriott. As many of you will remember, last year we destroyed a large part of Enid in a massive tornado. I am taking a section of this scenario and breaking it down to 1 square mile. Not everything in this square mile is destroyed but major damage and destruction will take place and we will test our ability to cope with this scenario. The area involved is between Chestnut and Garriott and between Cleveland and Oakwood. There are many business’s, homes, schools, and churches in this area and believe me when I say that this will tax all of our resources and the resources of our surrounding counties and possibly the state EOC. All disaster related organizations that deal in disaster response; medical response and facility management to funeral and recovery need to be involved with this exercise. City and County officials are invited to attend. ALWAYS KEEP IN MIND; exercises are designed to find weaknesses in all agency plans, guidelines, and instructions. There is NO failure in an exercise. We find those weaknesses together and fix them BEFORE the worst happens so hopefully the response through recovery is better handled by everyone involved when the real event occurs. Enjoy our cooler weather over the next week or so. Highs will average in the mid to upper 60’s to low 70’s and overnight lows in the low to mid 40’s. Finally, The Garfield County Public Safety Association asks me to add this Thank you to this email. I gladly do so: On behalf of the Garfield County rural firefighters and the Garfield County Public Safety Association, we would like to thank you for your overwhelming support during the election on Tuesday, October 8th. The continuance of the 1/10th cent sales tax will ensure that Breckenridge, Covington, Douglas, Drummond, Fairmont, Garber, Hillsdale-Carrier, Hunter, Kremlin, Lahoma, Pioneer Skeleton-Creek, and Waukomis departments can stay current with up to date training, equipment and apparatus needed to save lives and property. Since the first passage of a ¼ cent sales tax in 1996, and then a second and third continuance of a 1/10th cent sales tax in 2000 and 2005, as a county we’ve been able to purchase 36 pumpers/tankers, 33 grass rigs, 13 rescue trucks, 16 sets of rescue Jaws, 18 automatic external defibrillators, 12 new or upgraded fire stations, 200 sets of firefighting protective gear and assisted with the training of over 180 firefighters. Of these, 94 have emergency medical training and 30 who have specialized rescue training. The continuance of the tax that was approved by the voters on October 8th will ensure that we will continue to respond to the 1300-1600 rural emergencies per year, in the most efficient, well trained manner possible. Thank you for your support. Have a great week.
