Here is my report from this weeks south coast register Prawning - TopicsExpress

Here is my report from this weeks south coast register Prawning time, that’s right folks it’s time to dig up those LED lights which are somewhere in the back of the shed, I know there there, just can’t seem to see them hmm! Replace the nets that have once again had holes chewed in them by rats over the winter months and bye a good supply of matchsticks to keep your eyes open the next day at work after a long long night on the water, for its prawning season! And it’s looking like a pretty good one shaping up on the basin this year, the dark of the moon just gone is normally about the start of the season, and it didn’t disappoint with prawners managing to catch a couple of kilo’s of those delicious basin prawns in quick time. From no 1 car park at Christians Mindee right up to the ever popular Oaky island car park there were prawns caught. The size of the prawns isn’t great, but it is only the first dark too, the next one in just over a month’s time should produce some better prawns. The rivers and lagoons down south are also producing plenty of prawns with the average size somewhat better than the basin prawns. The only downfall is the travelling time to get to some of these locations, makes for a long night! So now you’ve caught your entrée its time to catch yourself a feed of fresh fish, so where too this week, well I can tell you the Shoalhaven/Crookhaven River system around Greenwell point to the entrance is producing some nice bream up around the 1 kg mark, live nippers around any of the “rocky spots” (I’m sure you can all put two and two together) are producing the better size fish. Jewies have also been present in these waters the last couple of weeks so it may pay to up your leader size to around 12lb to 14lb just in case! Schools of Salmon have also been hanging around the river mouth since last weekend coming and going as they please, as I’ve mentioned before Salmon aren’t that great to eat unless fish caked, but they are top fun to catch especially for the kids even the big kids! Kingfish are on and of the bight like a well used light switch, one day there bitting the next day there not, this is due to the current and then lack of. Some consistency would be nice, but I suppose beggars’ can’t be chooser’s and we have to make the most of the conditions at hand! Well I hope I’ve given you all some inspiration to get out and amongst it this week, remember to catch up with us on face book at McCallums Tackle World Nowra or drop us an email at [email protected] for all the latest in fishing info or with your fishy questions. And remember whatever you do in life, do it well Johnny out
