Here is the list of the new states approved by the Confab Delegates to the National Conference, yesterday endorsed the creation of 18 additional states in the country. If their recommendation is implemented, Nigeria will have 54 States. At present, the country has a 36-State structure and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, which is the nation’s capital. The decision was taken at the end of debate on the report of the Conference Committee on Political Restructuring and Forms of Government. Besides, the delegates agreed that in the spirit of reconciliation, equity and justice, an additional state shall be created for the South-East zone. The 18 proposed states were shared into three states for each of the geopolitical zones. They are: Apa from Benue State, Kainji from Niger, Katagum from Bauchi, Savannah from Borno, Amana from Adamawa, Gurara from Kaduna, Ghari from Kano, Etiti from South-East, Aba from Abia, Adada from Enugu and Njaba from Anambra and Imo. Others are: Anioma from Delta State, Ogoja from Cross River State, IJebu from Ogun State and New Oyo State from the present Oyo State However, the Conference gave a proviso that any new state should have minimum population of one million persons and resolved that a referendum be conducted in each of the states proposing to merge with 75% of the eligible voters in each of those states approving it. The Conference also agreed that states should have their own constitutions
