Heres Invention No. 11! Its a tour de force for speed and accuracy. Why? Because precision and virtuosic playing are a part and parcel of being a pianist. It is not optional. However speed, in my opinion, is somewhat genetic - you either have the capability or not. It is useless, though, if not musical. My feelings about teaching speed and accuracy to students is this. Practice SLOW! A good rule of thumb is to start at half-speed. If this is still too fast - and speed without accuracy again is useless - cut it in half again. Treat it as a ballad with dynamics, nuance and subtlety and gently increase the speed throughout the day over a course of days or weeks, depending on your level. It will naturally come.
