Heres an interesting article from Politico - a well-respected publication covering politics- on the topic of campaigns and campaign finance. I’m interested to hear what folks in the district think about the issue of campaign finance and the influence of money in politics. Any thoughts on the topic in general? I’d like to hear them. I was actively involved in campaign finance reform issues while in the Texas Legislature. I believe that in any democracy the electoral field should be level. Yet, the cost of a campaigning is prohibitive and can create a slanted playing field. And, for most people, raising the money necessary to run for office is a barrier that is nearly impossible to overcome. At the federal level, the problem is even more pronounced. Not only do federal campaigns usually cost more, there are also many third party groups who parachute in from far away places and spend unlimited amounts of money for or against a candidate - in many cases without even having to report who their donors are. Adding to the challenge, the US Supreme Court recently upended years and years of judicial precedents in their ruling in the Citizens United case - a ruling that entirely changed the rules for campaigns. Now, individual corporations are considered to have essentially the same rights as individual people - and thus, they have the right to spend money in campaigns, too.
