Heres my dilemma with a lot of the reunion tours happening (and not just recently): How many original members do there have to be (and which ones) for it to be considered the band? Axl is touring with Guns n Roses, but hes the only guy from the original band (Dizzy Reed didnt join until after Appetite...). If Slash toured with Duff, would he have more of a right to the name? Is either example enough to warrant use of the name? Who matters more, vocalists or guitarists (drummers rarely matter [unless youre Neil Peart] and bassists are hardly even acknowledged, let alone revered)? Daltrey and Townshend are still calling themselves The Who. Are they? When Geoff Tate and the other members of Queensryche split, they sued for the rights to the name. A preliminary injunction allowed BOTH the ability to use it. Hell, back in college, I saw Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman, & Howe - all early members of Yes. But Chris Squire was still touring with the guys who replaced those four and calling the band Yes. Which version WAS Yes? At what point does the band cease to become the band (can Queen ever be Queen without Freddie)? Does new music have to be involved? Yes, Van Halen has had three different singers and stayed Van Halen the entire time (no, nows not the time to argue that they werent really VH when Gary was in the band) as they continued to record, tour, and perform new music. Well, that was true until they got back with David Lee Roth; now anything between 1985 and 2011 seems to have been nullified. But Im digressing... When we go to a show, what exactly are we going for? Are we going for the music? If so, are we perhaps better off seeing a great tribute band (i.e. Dirty Deeds, Lotus Land, Joshua Tree) for maybe $25? Or are we paying $200 so we can say, I saw [insert bands name here]? Or am I just over-analyzing the issue, in which case you can tell me to shut the hell up and enjoy the music any way I want to?
