Heres my letter to the mayor and council. Please use any of it if it will make it easier for you to send an email off ASAP! I urge you to make swift use of article 15.3c of the WPZ Operations and Management Agreement by adopting a disposition policy that would insist the two remaining elephants be sent to sanctuary rather than to another zoo lacking space to adequately care for their needs. Im sure someone at the City can think of appropriate language to accomplish this. The most cursory review of conditions at zoos compared to conditions at PAWS Sanctuary leaves no doubt as to which situation would be best for the animals. As for conservation efforts, I quote a comment following the recent Crosscut article: ... in five visits to the Performing Animal Welfare Society, I have learned more about elephants than anyone will EVER learn by going to [a] zoo and reading a few self-serving signs. PAWS is a legitimate active education program. (bjane) If we want whats best for the animals AND whats most effective for conservation, Bamboo and Chai should be sent to PAWS.
