Heres the latest on timing and impacts for Thursdays storm! Wednesday: Dense fog and low clouds to start in the valleys and along the coast. Ceilings lifting through the morning, becoming mostly cloudy for the rest of the day. Breezy this afternoon with winds picking up tonight. Highs in the 60s. Thursday: Strong southerly winds for most of the day, especially in the higher elevations. Winds peak at 25-35mph with gusts to 40mph in populated areas, 30-40mph, gusting to 80mph in the higher elevations. Tree damage and power outages probable. A band of very heavy rain and a few thunderstorms mixed in will move north to south – Santa Cruz and Santa Clara County: late morning into the early afternoon, Monterey and San Benito Counties: early afternoon into early evening. Rain heavy at times. Some flooding possible. Highs in the upper 50s to low 60s. Combined seas of 15 to 20 feet likely making marine travel difficult creating hazardous conditions on the coast. Timing: A band of heavy rain and thunderstorms will move East, southeast across the Central Coast tomorrow afternoon. Expect this band to reach Santa Cruz County first around the noon hour on Thursday...northwest Monterey County, Santa Clara County, and northwest San Benito County in the early afternoon between noon and 3:00pm. The heavy rain will move farther south and east into Southern Monterey County by evening. Expect very heavy rainfall rates within this band of rain and storms for potentially a few hours at any given location. Afterward, rain showers linger into the night hours and day on Friday. As far as the rain is concerned, here are forecast totals through Thursday night: 4-8 Santa Cruz Mountains, Santa Lucia Range 2-4 Santa Cruz Coast 1-3 Monterey Peninsula, Pajaro Valley, Salinas Area, Santa Clara Valley, northern San Benito County, Gabilan & Diablo Ranges 0.5-2 Inland Monterey & San Benito County Valleys Extended: Showers and perhaps a few thunderstorms linger on Friday before a mostly sunny and cool weekend. Another system brings rain chances on Monday. A HIGH WIND WARNING is in place for our entire area beginning at 10PM on Wednesday and lasting through 10PM on Thursday. Conditions will favor sustained winds of 20-30 with gusts to 45mph for most populated areas, 30-40mph sustained winds with gusts to 80mph will be possible in the coastal mountains and higher elevations. Tree and property damage is probable in exposed areas, power outages can be expected and driving conditions will be difficult. A FLASH FLOOD WATCH is in place for our entire area from late Wednesday through late Thursday. Widespread heavy rain could result in flashing flooding in urban areas and small streams. Mudslides/debris flows are possible in the mountains and especially in burn scars. A GALE WARNING is in effect for our coastal waters from 3PM to 10PM Thursday Southerly winds over will build 25-40 knots with gusts to 50 knots on Thursday. Combined seas of 15-20 feet will be possible Wednesday into Thursday. A HIGH SURF ADVISORY is in place for our entire coastal area from 10PM Wednesday through 4PM Friday. Expect combined seas of 15-20ft with some breakers near the coast topping 20ft. Conditions near the beach will be hazardous with beach erosion and deadly rip currents possible.
