During his five-decade career, HERBIE MANN brought the jazz flute into full flower, transforming it from an occasional diversion into a solid, center-stage, lead instrument. He was an early advocate of world music, and crossed over into black radio with funky fusion recordings that avoided the banality of commercialized jazz. Yet despite his airplay and success he remained a true jazz artist, a deft instrumentalist and improviser, and an accomplished, dynamic bandleader, composer and producer.
