Heres what I have to say about this exercise: IT BURNS. Three muscles make up your backside, AKA your butt: gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, and gluteus minimus. With the maximus being the largest and most powerful of the three (think squats), many times the other two get neglected. With that being said, what purpose do they serve? To keep it simple, any time you stand on one leg with your hips level, you are activating the medius and minimus muscles. Single leg exercises such as split squats, single leg reaches, lunges..all of these exercises are key in keeping you stable using these two muscles. The following video is a cut from a workout that I use to activate my stability muscles. The slow movement in the beginning helps to isolate the gluteal muscles and the pump in the middle helps to build strength and endurance! Test this out and see..how strong is your butt?!! ;)
