Hey everybody, here is the finished video for the Japanese learning English group. Please review it and comment - gotta make sure its good! The Jeopardy question break is around 1 min 47s, and the jeopardy question is written below: HOST: Yes, it looks like our Japanese friend is having quite a bit of difficulty pronouncing their r’s. In fact, this is one of the most commonly expressed problems among Japanese learners. Does anybody have an idea why? Yes, you there. FAKE AUDIENCE MEMBER: Well, there are two main reasons for this. Firstly, in Japanese, the /r/ only appears at the onset of syllables, such as ra, re, ri, ru, and ro, which naturally makes it difficult for the speaker to pronounce the r after the vowel, such as in article and mars, where the r sound comes after the a sound. Secondly, Japanese has only one liquid consonant, which varies between the [l] and [ɹ] sound, and any of these variations are generally perceived as the same phoneme, which is neither /l/ nor /r/, but [j]. HOST: That’s right. And, can you tell us the manner and articulation of the sound? FAKE AUDIENCE MEMBER: Yeah that an easy one! Its a (voiceless?) alveolar flap! HOST: Yes would you like to explain how this sound is produced? FAKE AUDIENCE MEMBER: Sure. To make this sound we first place our tongue on the alveolar ridge and then we make a swift up and down movement with our tongue to make the [j] sound. HOST: Thank you! That is a great explanation!
