He’s not a bad egg, that Ronaldo. The incredibly prolific Real Madrid star can come across as a bit egotistical and self-interested at times but he showed that he’s not a bad lad at all recently when sending a personal letter to a Miami District Attorney on behalf of a fan who had invaded the pitch during Real Madrid’s pre-season tour of the US During Real Madrid’s friendly with Chelsea in Miami last month, Ronaldo was greeted on the pitch by 20-year-old Ronald Gjoka, who gave his hero a hug and then held on for all his might before being escorted away with little fuss. Despite there being no real harm done, Gjoka was arrested and charged with trespass and disorderly conduct, charges which could end up with an expulsion from college and deportation back to his native Albania, according to his attorney, who claimed that he may have “problems with immigrations and his college if the charges aren’t dropped”. “It is my understanding that he now recognises his error and the importance of security. I do not want to see him face criminal penalties for his error,” the attorney added. They might have only met for a minute on the pitch but some sort of bond must have developed between Gjoka and Ronaldo as the Portuguese international has penned a letter pleading for leniency for Gjoka to the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office. “I understand your position and the importance of enforcing rules and law,” Ronaldo wrote. “However, I respectfully request that you and your office reconsider this decision and dismiss the two criminal charges this young man faces.” What fate Gjoka will face remains to be seen but the intervention of the world’s highest profile, highest paid and arguably most talented footballer could well make a difference. Even still, it’s a pretty classy gesture from Ronaldo; like we said, not a bad egg at all.
