Hi, I am new to the group and new in fact to quarter horses. - TopicsExpress

Hi, I am new to the group and new in fact to quarter horses. Having recently found out my horse of six years can not be ridden again I find I am considering getting another horse. I have no experience of qhs at all, apart from there being a lovely gelding at the yard, that is used mainly for polocrosse. But, I like the look of him and particularly like his temperament. I am of an age where a kind and steady temperament is of paramount importance, together with soundness. Ive had six years of disappointment and heatache with my current mare and I dont want to waste any more time with potential problems. Which is why I have to ask this question. Some people have told me that qhs are prone to hock problems, because they are often quite straight behind. Can anyone please put my mind at rest about this? I have noticed that some are quite straight behind, but some are not, is this something that any of you have experienced? I really want to be as sure as I can be about this prior to looking for my next horse, which will probably also be my last horse. Obviously I would have any potential purchase vetted and it would be an area I would specifically ask the vet for advice on. Like anyone I want to avoid any potential problems. Any advice and/or information would be most welcome.
