Hi Shooters, Here with a some information for all to read and comment on. This has never happened in my presence, however, it may of happened at our club before and would be an interesting discussion - LESSON TO BE LEARNT- Weekend shoots are all practice shoots and are allot of fun, but ultimately we shoot them to gain experience for bigger IPSC events or competitions! For this reason, they should be shot as though one were in a competitive event and not just a fun Saturdays outing. Obviously things happen during the course of fire, but we need to be able to learn from them and thus improve our understanding of the rules. It is for this reason that I asked Tara to post on-line, in the Global Village to attain some answers. The scenario, with answers are as follows: On a weekend shoot we do not have the luxury of having dedicated ROs that range only and do not shoot. Shooters have to RO each other so have their guns on. With that in mind, I would like your thoughts on the following scenario. Long course of fire with a lot of running, the RO starts the shooter. Beep and off they go.....A little into the COF the RO knocks his own gun and dislodges it out of the holster. He realises this and catches it but then places the weapon on the floor and runs off behind the shooter, leaving his weapon on the floor, to carry on ranging. A second RO/competitor then picks up the weapon, clears it, locks the slide back and waits for the RO and shooter to finish the range and then hands the gun back to the 1st RO. Ok and...................go..... *************************** Officiating as you explained is not restricted to your region, especially at club and level I matches. The situation you described is a lesson to us all. My comment Dropping a gun during the COF while not a competitor? No DQ. Placing it on the ground = handling. DQ 10.5.1 Abandoning it? DQ 10.5 or 10.6 as a general unsafe practice probably according to local legislation. I cant find a specific rule for it. Competitor retrieving it DQ 10.5.14 So there should have been two DQs, one for the officiating RO/competitor, and another one for the competitor who retrieved the gun. I would propose the following: 1. Immediate action: Stop the competitor, sort out gun, reshoot. No DQs, lesson learnt. 2. Preventative action: The officiating RO bag his gun before officiating. Safest. *********************************************** In reality this practice occurs all over the world every weekend. Whether its a few shooters practicing a couple of stages or even a Level 1 or 2 match. It doesnt make it right but it happens.
