Highlight of my day thus far: One of my fourth graders comes up to me and asks Why do you always wear a headband? I already told you, its not a headband, its called hijab He repeats Its a hijab. I soften and go into my typical spiel about how its something some Muslim women wear to embody modesty (they just learned that word during Reading.) and that I wear it to distinguish myself. I look at his wide-eyed face, realizing that that mightve been too much to take in. Jesse (a pseudonym) love, what did you get from what I just said? A hijab is a way for Muslim women to express themselves. I smile because I know hes the future. Teaching is a human business. - Amy
