His story has always been an inspiration to me. It is the story of a man who endured more ill treatment and set backs than most people could imagine, yet he went on to become one of the most successful figures in all of human history. I am referring to the story of Joseph recorded between Genesis 37 and 50. His life story should be a mandatory case study for every young man and woman. It is packed with principles of success. Listen to what one text of Scripture says about him, "The Lord was with Joseph, so he became a successful man. And he was in the house of his master, the Egyptian. Now his master saw that the Lord was with him and how the Lord caused all that he did to prosper in his hand. So Joseph found favor in his sight and became his personal servant; and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he owned he put in his charge. (Genesis 39:2-4 NASB). Though the word "successful" is used several times in the Bible for reaching a goal or completing a task of some kind, but it is applied to Joseph alone as being a "successful man." The Bible only produced one copy of "Success Magazine" and Joseph was on the cover. His success was rooted in his relationship with God. Though there were several episodes in his life of tragic setback, Gods favor was on his life. He was promoted through the ranks wherever plight dumped him. The key is that his character and integrity remained consistent no matter what his circumstances. He was real! This brings me to a vital principle of success. I simple call it "Consistency Over Time." It relates to consistency in character, convictions, attitude and work ethic. These are the measures of a true walk with God. This is the Joseph principle. This is part of the reason behind Gods favor on his life. The other virtue responsible for Gods favor was grace. This is rooted in the nature of God. From the beginning, God set Joseph aside and showered His grace upon him. Despite the manifold trials and adversity, Joseph never strayed from God. God was the greatest constant in his life. I encourage you to study the life of Joseph. I have barely scratched the surface of what his life teaches about true success. I do know this, if you want to be a successful person you must spend time walking in the sandals of Joseph.
