Holy shit... what a night! The kindness of strangers is incredible though. Tonight after leaving San Diego to return to LA at 11p, my car overheated. It pulled air into the cooling system somehow, again. I bled the system and got back on the road. While passing through Camp Pendleton, truly the most remote area I could be in on highway 5 from SD -> LA, my radiator hose cracked and I lost nearly all my coolant and was stuck. A cop pulled over shortly after, made sure I was ok, and I called AAA. While being told by AAA that it would cost me $430 to tow my car to OC to Alexs shop, the closest shop I knew of, a random stranger knocked on my window asking if I was ok. This guy was probably my age, on his way to meet his buddies for a late-night burger and wanted to see if he could help me (nearly 1am at this point). We we were able to patch the hole enough for me to limp 6 more miles to the gas station. I was able to buy coolant and water with the plan to limp home. In those six miles I had to stop again briefly, during which this guy went ahead to Shell and bought coolant with the plan to go back and find me in case I didnt show up at Shell shortly after him. I met him at the gas station, thanked him again and went on my way. The patch held, I stopped one more time on the way home and made the entire SEVENTY miles home. I never carry cash and was only able to give this guy $10 bucks. He laughed and said even that wasnt needed, but hell, I had to do something. The car will go back to the shop and need a new radiator hose. But, I home due to this guys help and a few things he carries in his car combined with a few things I carry in mine.. But most of all because he offered a stranger some help at 1am in the middle of nowhere.
