Hong Kong is in the middle of major upheaval and protest. At issue is how their executive leader is chosen. All candidates for Hong Kongs executive post has to be approved by a committee made up of pro-Beijing stooges. This was a new development by China in an attempt to assert itself in the semi autonomous territory China acquired decades ago from the UK. This conflict was likely inevitable. With the financial importance of Hong Kong, it doubted that China would simply turn a blind eye to the influence of one of its own territories. The model of One country, two systems was inevitably going to crack based on the nature of the Chinese government.
