Hoping to live a long life? Then feast on salmon or ocean trout. Two servings a week is all it takes to extend your days on Earth. You know that fish is good for you, but just how much do you need to see real health benefits? Just two non-fried servings of salmon or ocean trout — they are the only ones with real fish fats anymore — per week will reduce your risk of death by 27 percent. That much fish can also cut your risk of dying from heart disease by 35 percent. Salmon and ocean trout are rich in heart-healthy polyunsaturated omega-3s that reduce inflammation and lower the risk of brain and eye dysfunction. Some fish contain more beneficial omega-3s than others. In the recent Oceana fish DNA typing study, these two species were less likely to be mislabeled. By comparison, 94 percent of sushi tuna was mislabeled, and 30 samples of red snapper were from 27 different fish genre. And remember that how you prepare your fish is just as important as what kind you eat. In general, it’s best to broil, grill, bake, poach or steam your fish. Avoid deep-frying (the fry fat replaces the natural fish fat) and avoid cooking in butter or cream.
