Horror Project/ Part 13 of 31: Fearing Separation Sisters - TopicsExpress

Horror Project/ Part 13 of 31: Fearing Separation Sisters Brian De Palma is well known for his borrowing of Hitchcocks style and making it his own. Sisters was his first foray into horror, later birthing classics like Carrie and Dressed to Kill. We spend the first half hour leading up to a crazy murder, the second with a whole new character who witnesses it, and the last half hour summing everything up. The last half hour of the movie is trippy and mindboggling. The use of split screen is used very effectively. Canadian actress Margot Kidder, later to become Lois Lane for 4 superman movies, had Sisters as one of her breakout roles. William Finley is my favorite acting collaborator, as it is very interesting to see such a dramatic shift between his Winslow character in Phantom of the Paradise and this. Brian De Palma was able to convince Hitchcocks old collaborator Bernard Hermann to come out of retirement to write the very effective score. The movies shock value doesnt exactly hold up in its many years, but some of the twists for the weird do. Plus, the red paint gore effects are surprisingly effective. Perhaps the most interesting part of the movie is that its kind of narrative shift storytelling isnt really existent anymore in the thriller/horror genre. It would be interesting if more directors revisited Hitchcock for story instead of just style. De Palma did both and more.
