House passes bill concerning repair of communication devices during disasters STATEHOUSE – State Representative Randy Frye (R-Greensburg) has coauthored a piece of legislation to make it easier for broadcast technicians and engineers to do their jobs during emergencies. House Bill (HB) 1037 passed the Indiana House of Representatives last week with a 95-0 vote. Under current law, broadcast engineers and technicians can be arrested for entering disaster-affected areas that haven’t first been cleared by first responders. This makes it more difficult for these workers to do their job, and subsequently more difficult for people in those areas to get the information they need. HB 1037 allows these technicians and engineers to enter disaster-affected areas and make needed repairs, so people can stay informed of critical warnings during emergencies and disasters. “This is important, not only for the workers themselves, but also for public safety,” said Rep. Frye. “If these workers are not able to get to the stations and repair equipment, people in the area may be deprived of vital information. This places an entire community at risk. HB 1037 fixes that problem and could ultimately save lives.” The bill will now go to the state Senate, where there will be further discussion and debate.
