Houstons Aviation History: WASPs It was on this day in 1942 that the first class of the AAFWFTD, 619th Group, was formed at the Houston Municipal Airport. Noted aviatrix Jacquelyn Cochran was appointed commander of the 619th. Even though military aircraft and military standards and demeanor were enforced, it was created as a civilian program. The goal was to train women to ferry military aircraft around as needed thus freeing up male recruits for combat. Housing, aircraft and classrooms were at Municipal Airport and maintained by the Aviation Activities FBO. In later years the AAFWFTD program would be better known as the WASPs - Womens Airforce Service Pilots.
