How #FormulaE keeps even its #logistics clean Formula 1’s - TopicsExpress

How #FormulaE keeps even its #logistics clean Formula 1’s carbon footprint away from the track is infamous, with an ever-expanding calendar of races to which a train of staff and equipment move between. Like Formula 1, Formula E is a global sport, with 10 races a season in various cities around the world, with a considerable entourage of hardware and personnel in tow. The series got off to a good start last weekend, but to its organizers and the many companies competing the racing is only part of the equation. Promoting sustainable mobility and incubating technology destined for road cars are equally important goals. Unlike Formula 1, then, the novel race series has an environmental agenda to uphold, which means getting around the world with as small a carbon footprint as possible. Beijing and Buenos Aires are hardly neighbours, after all. “DHL, our logistics partner, is going to design a special logistics strategy minimize the carbon print of the championship,” said Alejandro Agag, CEO of Formula E, earlier this year. Now, that plan is coming to fruition. Formula E DHL logistics 2 The crux of the plan is to incorporate all the cities that host races in one around-the-world trip. During a Formula 1 season updates and staff are continually moving between racing destinations and Europe, where all of the teams are based. This won’t be the case in Formula E. Even with DHL’s economical shipping, the 200 tonnes of equipment required for each race will still have travelled roughly 30,000 miles before it returns to Donington after the last race in June next year, so an awareness of carbon emissions is important. Where possible, overland routes will be be used in place of DHL’s transport aircraft, and the car’s will remain in special containers designed to withstand huge pressure. How DHL is shipping each of the 41 chassis, including their 300 kg lithium-ion battery packs, is detailed in the clip below.
