How I know I am getting old: When I was very young, there was talk during the 60’s feminist movement that women were not being considered when it came to political and social issues…..oh, sure, we were the ‘better half’ of a couple, we were the ‘heart of the family unit’, but even medically we were considered to be short men….we are not. When Neil Armstrong landed on the moon, his words seemed to be, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” All of feminist movement jumped on the short declaration; where was womanhood? Where was womankind? Where were the girls? …they were working just as hard and just as diligently, only no one outside knew about it….it was why we had Sally Ride and Shannon Lucid ready for some more of the right stuff…..but we girls, we didn’t know these wonderful folks existed…sometimes I wonder if my life had been a do-over, would I have pursued that dream of being an engineer in space….. …Back to Neil Armstrong’s declaration…he explained later that he had said, “That’s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.” Well, if you listen to the broadcast, it doesn’t have that extra ‘a’…..supposedly if it did, it would quiet the feminists….. ….the point? On the way from Houston, I was listening to talk radio, a habit I picked up when traveling with my grandfather….many years ago….anyway, the announcer said that if it were true Neil had included the ‘a’, he sure was an egotistical son of a gun……the announcer was too young to know there was a feminist movement and why it was created in the first place…so many don’t know that women received the right to vote two hundred years after the country was born….so many women suffered persecution and almost death to help the ‘cause’…. …Neil Armstrong wasn’t being egotistical….he was hoping for forgiveness for a slip up….
