How does designer Michael Anastassiades find #inspiration? Below are excerpts from the Q&A session following his lecture at the School of Visual Arts this afternoon. Q. How do you find inspiration? A. Inspiration is very personal. Its different for everyone and can come from anything... I think the best results come when the inspiration is very personal. Q. How do you categorize your lighting? (Floor lamp, table etc. ) A. For me it doesnt matter and the anonymity of the categorization is what makes it a personal choice. I prefer a freer approach; the String Lights, for example, can be hung low so they arent really a ceiling lamp. Q. Did you find that the socially charged pieces were less marketable than a beautiful pendant? A. I love beautiful things And saying something more. I had to negotiate with myself which way to go. It is perfectly possible to do both. Q. Are you an artist, or a designer? A. Im creative person. Everyone is creative. The quality of an object is not measured by your profession, it must stand on its own. Q. What keeps you up at night? A. I try to sleep as much as I can. Im an anxious person, thinking all the time. I dream of objects in my sleep. Its a way of coming up with ideas. Sometimes the best things come up When Im very stressed about something. Q. Have you seen others coping your design? Does it bother you? A. Of course it bothers you. You think: Why do they have to do that? Why have I spent so much time on this thought and idea. Its a difficult one. Someone told me the biggest compliment is anonymity. Q. Have you had to pay more attention to environmentalism lately? A. I design for things to last. Talking about Environmentalism for products is purely marketing. Its about making something to be truly timeless, not for one or five years but for more than a lifetime.
