Howdy folks, what are your thoughts on disposable coffee pods? If you’re anything like me you loathe them with a passion. It’s not about the coffee, it’s about the unnecessary waste of resources in the making AND disposal of them. Imagine my delight when on Thursday evening I discovered an entire range of jewellery designed and created by a first year student at Design Centre Enmore’s Jewellery and Object Design end of year exhibition, Land|Mark. Albert Tse has melted the discarded pods down and cast them into a new form - breathing new life into what is essentially waste - and applied colour by anodising them. It’s GENIUS. In stark contrast to Albert’s organic forms, Kate Butchart’s experience as a textile designer clearly informs her work. Kate has taken discarded pen barrels and created an equally clever and aesthetically pleasing range of geometric brooches and necklaces. If you’d like to support local makers and see more recycled waste made precious, visit Land|Mark at Brand X, Level 3, Central (the living mall on Broadway) 10-7pm Saturday and 10-5pm Sunday.
