#HumpDay 7: closing CanyonMuses in mourning of some thangs ~ so only fitting to play my favorite dirge of all by the Maestro Bra Hugh Masekela. Besides Gene Clark, Kristofferson & a very select few, Masekela is my biggest influence, stretching all the way back before we came to Earth: my fathers best friend @ college was the Revolutionary Azanian/ ANC poet Keorapetse Bra Willie Kgositsile who, as Hughs cousin, got him to play a benefit show to raise my fathers first passage to move to Africa. Our parents remained friends with Bra Masekela & his wife Miriam Makeba throughout the era until the Dream was deferred again. Living in Maseru, 10 miles from Tolkiens birthplace of Bloemfontein, at the height of Apartheid, the dark weight & sorrowful import of this song (one of our mothers most favorite ever) decrying the abuses and exploitation of SAF men conscripted into working in the diamond mines has never lessened in power ~ Stimela youtube/watch?v=cPxmmMpfG88
