Hurricane Simon got even stronger tonight, with maximum sustained winds now at 130 mph. This makes Simon a Category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane wind Scale, and the 6th hurricane over the eastern North Pacific Ocean to do so this season. Simon has probably reached its peak intensity, and a gradual weakening should begin as it moves over cooler waters. The hurricane is centered about 395 miles west-southwest of the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula as of 11 p.m. EDT / 8 p.m. PDT. There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect. Simon is expected to produce total rainfall amounts of 2 to 4 inches - with isolated amounts around 8 inches - during the next several days across central portions of the Baja California peninsula and the state of Sonora in northwest Mexico. These rains could produce flash flooding and mud slides. The trend of models suggests that moisture from Simon could bring another heavy rain event to the southwestern United States in a few days.
