I MISSED POSTING THIS TWO DAYS AGO (NOVEMBER 5) IN MEMORY OF A TIME LIKE THIS LAST YEAR. It’s something I wrote and posted last year. But you can read, friend: “Few days ago – precisely, on November 5, 2012, IZE – a pretty lady from Igbira tribe in Kogi State of Nigeria and a bosom girl-friend to one of my colleagues, celebrated her birthday with us. Gleaning and believing that I could have a way with words, she demanded that I do a POEM for her as my own birthday gift. I pitied her! She never knew am not sure of my competence in poem-writings, and that I seldom write poems, unlike I do with prose/essays. Did I throw in the towel either? NO! I chose to impress IZE, while avoiding to be that amateur violinist that would soil the beautiful echo of the on-going beautiful music by bowing a discordant note. Smiles... IZE in Igbira language refers to a “wealthy girl”. Below is the little poem, friends: IZE – Wealthy girl! (On your birthday) And I saw him in my imagination, Extending to her an affection, Am sure it was he who was to be your father, Wooing she who was to be your mother. At that breezy hour, when the sky was dark, Her lower temples were let apart for him to mark, Thus, the course of nature had to take its place, And all came reflecting on your regal face. Years upon years, you got formed to be at your best, Experiences both sad and sweet gathered at your nest, Making you the attractor of wealths, That the rest of us may have in you our healths. On that regal face, the eyes beamed wealth of love, And the nostrils breathed life in a move, The mouth let out sounds that are melodious in speech, Even as the lips held ones attention – with its smile – to a screech. Its just how you came about – healthily, And how you went about – wealthily, Making others feel the wealth of your life, And no wonder you were born on November Five”. By: Chijioke Ngobili.
