I am 45 and am...was a physical rehabilitation nurse. I was diagnosed with Leukoencephalopathy 7 months ago, knew in June that I wasnt safe to practice at the time (thought that I would be able to go back to work, but was wrong) and was terminated 2 weeks ago. Then the other day I was with my Mom and a friend of hers innocently asked what I did for a living. I FROZE! I didnt know what to say, I stuttered, lol (I already am doing that regularly and have been for over a month now) and said uh, Im was a physical rehab nurse, but Im not working. And she said Oh youre retired? I stumbled again and just stared at Mom. not knowing what to say. Mom Quickly changed the subject. Im not ready or willing to share with anyone and everyone, my diagnosis or my business. But, WHAT do I say?? The question was normal and very innocent. When Mom and I talked later we laughed, not, both of us saying that it never crossed either of our minds that anyone would ask what I do for a living. But, thats a normal question when you 1st meet someone. When someone asks my Mom or retired friends what they do they say Im a retired teacher, or Im a retired nurse. SO LEUKO FAMILY... WHAT am I suppose to say???
