I am Chas...Moderator, Photographer, but more importantly a Student. For 20 years, I was a Radiographer (X-ray tech). But, I won’t go into detail other than to say that in x-ray we use terms like KV, MA, and S...(Kilovolts, Milliamps, and Seconds). It is our Exposure Triangle. In that career, I became a “Super-tech”...our common affectionate term for one who excelled at what they were doing. I knew my craft and honed my skills, such that I was the best at what I did. With a Flashlight, a glass of water, and a square box, I could teach the fundamentals of Radiation Physics to anyone. I was just that good. But, as I enter the world of photography…I am an amateur even though I can transition my x-ray knowledge over to photography. Yet, I so desperately want to hone my photographic skills and learn my craft, so that not only can I produce great photographs, but that I can teach or help someone else along the way. However, as much as I become better; as much knowledge as I ascertain; as much as I am able to become a teacher, I am now and will always be a student. One day, I will be able to articulate every little nuance of photography to someone who may be impressed by my knowledge; but, little will they know that on that same day, I may have struggled to get a good shot at a birthday party in an awkwardly lit room with incandescent lighting…while the girl next to me got a great shot with her point-and-shoot or worst her camera phone. Please, never be so cocky as to belittle someone just because they are starting out. And, never think that because you can recite the photographic encyclopedia or can take a camera/lens apart and put it back together again, that there is no more room for you to learn. And, if you are learning, then you are still a student of photography too. And, this is a course where the grades don’t matter and the lesson never ends. So, NDC&PE is a place where you should come to share with fellow student things you know or ask questions about things you don’t know. If you are above sharing, teaching or learning, then this may not be the best group for you. At its core our motto is helping each other. Please, let us remember this in all our commentary. Teach me, so that I can teach someone else! Help me, so that I can help someone else!
