I am getting a little tired of the allegation that small government conservatives/libertarians are simply selfish people who don’t care about helping their fellow man. No. The difference between the two groups is not WHETHER they want to help. The difference is WHERE they look for help and in what sequence. SMALL GOVT TYPES: Family, friends, community/churches (1st responders) --> Private charities/faith-based organizations (help 2nd) --> Local government (3rd, if needed) --> State government (4th, if needed) --> Federal government (only as a last resort). BIG GOVT TYPES: Federal government (go here first!) --> State government (2nd) --> Local government (3rd) --> Private charities/faith-based organizations (4th) --> Family, friends, community/churches (last resort, if you must). The small government mindset **maximizes** freedom, while providing those who need it with more personalized, effective assistance. The big government mindset **minimizes** freedom, while providing bureaucratic, inefficient one-size-fits-all, impersonal help. I wish we could all quit casting aspersions on each other. By and large, our differences lie in HOW to solve problems, not whether we want to solve them.
