I am off to cast my vote for Navajo Nation President. If you have - TopicsExpress

I am off to cast my vote for Navajo Nation President. If you have not been following the elections on the Navajo Nation this year, they have been a bit chaotic. On one side we have a candidate Joe Shirley who has already served 2 terms but is running for a third (non-consecutive) term because there is nothing in our constitution that explicitly states that you cannot serve a third non-consecutive term. On the other side we have Chris Deschene, a young Navajo leader who has served both our Navajo Nation and the State of AZ well. He came in second in the primary (behind Joe Shirley). But, he is not fluent in the Navajo language and therefore has been excluded by our constitution from holding the office of Navajo Nation President. Last week our Navajo Nation Supreme court ruled that his name needs to be removed from the ballots. So earlier this week our tribal council passed a law allowing Chris Deschene to remain on the ballot. But a few days ago our Navajo Nation President vetoed that bill. However, our Navajo Nation Election Board Commissioner went on record stating that he will go to jail before he removes Chris name from the ballot and thereby invalidating the large number of ballots that were cast early. All in all it has been a very eventful election season here on the Navajo Nation. :-) I am off to cast my vote for Chris. If he is on the ballot I will check the box by his name. And if he has been removed from the ballot I will write his name in. Never a dull moment here on the Rez. :-) Here is a good NPR story explaining the drama. npr.org/blogs/codeswitch/2014/10/30/359902026/navajo-nation-presidential-candidate-suspends-campaign
