I am posting this for my wife who does not do FaceBook. I agree with her. The weekend of October 19-12, the Americus Historic Trust in collaboration with the Georgia Historic Trust is hosting a Ramble. Guests are coming from all over the state and elsewhere to visit homes, The Windsor, The Rylander, The Lee Council House, the Plains Community Center, downtown Americus and who knows what else. The local historic trust will reap ½ the proceeds. Over 300 tickets have been sold. Our lovely town needs to SHINE! I was in Beverly Bremer’s Silver Shop in Atlanta a few weeks ago as I needed to have some spoons fixed that my garbage disposal had chomped on. The lady that helped me and took my address said that she was coming to Americus for this event. She said she is so excited about seeing “Peacock Alley” and hopefully meeting our nationally acclaimed designer, Furlow Gatewood. Americus is so fortunate to have so much artistic talent and architecture to show off. I could write a book on my talented friends in Americus, but I am writing this letter to encourage all of us to greet these guests with our famous southern hospitality and charm. I personally plan to wage a campaign to pick up the litter in my neighborhood where some of the houses are featured. It distresses me to see how much litter the inhabitants of our town throw in the streets. If any of you have a voice at the high school, I encourage you to address this problem to the students, who often walk on our street. To be honest, I don’t think the majority of the trash comes from pedestrian traffic; I fear it’s thrown out of cars passing by. When I was a child, I was taught it was illegal to litter. I am not in the habit of breaking the law intentionally even though I have had some speeding tickets – sometimes my foot just gets heavy on the pedal. I have never thrown anything on the ground except an apple core or something else bio-degradable. I have on occasion put a piece of gum in a bush when I do not have any paper to wrap it in. I have also lost the chase when a high wind whisks a paper away too fast for me to grab. So I am guilty, but I would never intentionally throw cans, paper, or anything on the ground that would detract from the beauty of our city. Please make a concerted effort to “de-litter” Americus over the next week. Hopefully, the habit will remain. After all, an added benefit is we burn extra calories bending over or carrying trash to a trash can! Campaign for a cleaner Americus, Elise Miller
