I am so sorry to hear of the passing of A&R, music executive, and record producer Steve Backer. A true maverick in the music business, Steve was an incredible music producer and creative visionary including amazing work at the Impulse!, Arista and Novus labels. He put together The Brecker Brothers as a musical entity, and balanced commercial success with the cutting edge of music with the signings of Henry Threadgill, Cecil Taylor, Keith Jarrett, Anthony Braxton, and also ushered in the late 80s young lions era with the likes of Roy Hargrove, Danilo Perez and Marcus Roberts. Steve was a true friend of mine and I spent many days in the past few years with him at his home in Scarsdale talking about the music business. When I suggested that he sign jazz vocalist, Carol Welsman to Savoy, he also knew how to return a solid and asked me to produce Hubert Laws for the label in return. A great guy, and a class act, who many will truly miss. This is a sad day for Jazz. RIP
