I applaud the U.S. Department of Education and The United States Department of Justice for their new guidelines on meeting the needs of English Learner (EL) students and parents. These students, approximately 10% of all public school students nationwide, are an important part of our community. In Congress, I’ve worked to get EL students, and their families, additional resources through legislation like the SUCCEED Act, as well as in my role as an appropriator. Today’s announcement marks the first time in 25 years that the Department of Education has released guidance on EL students, and the first time ever for the Department of Justice. I look forward to continuing to work with both departments as we advocate for this population of students. We have a responsibility to ensure that each and every child receives an excellent education. #ESL
