I came today across an ethnographic film called As hiper mulheres (the Hyperwomen) about the the lives of the Kuikuro people of southern parts of Upper Xingu in central Brazil. It turned out to be the winning film of the 2012 Al Jazeera Documentary competition. Kuikuro is one of the variants of the Upper Xingu Carib language, it is head final and ergative. The morphology is extremely rich, with many processes of derivation and valency change. The Kuikúro still speak their mother language. Speakers of other Upper Xingú languages are limited to 10%. Speakers of Portuguese are, now, more than 50% of the population (various degrees of fluency, the majority of the speakers of Portuguese are men 40 years old or younger). One of the first contact of the Kuikuros with Europeans was with the German Karl Non den Steinen’s 1884 expedition.
