I can finally post the Austin Bands show now that the season is over. The more I watch the state performances, the more I realize that not only should they have made the top 10, they should have come in 1st. Not a single other Band could compare in terms of drill difficulty and music originality. No, they didnt have 350+ students on the field creating fluff with multiple color guard outfits and over the top (yet useless) props, nor did they have an extra large sound (enabling the in tune to mask the off pitch) that penetrated every body. What they had was movement and precision found in college marching bands and a musical selection played with control and elegance. And speaking of elegance, no color guard could hold a candle to the Angels! In all honesty, I feel sorry for the judges because I really think that they simply didnt know what do so with us. Austin didnt stand in place and blow air. They had continuous movement. They didnt play the same old tired pieces heard year after year, decade after decade. The 9 minutes the judges had to grade Austin simply wasnt enough time to process what they had seen and heard on the field. It is like trying to compare Kraft Mac and cheese to New Orleans Red Fish Grills lobster Mac and cheese. Kraft Mac is consistent, familiar and perfect for WHAT IT IS. But, it could never compare to the lobster Mac and cheese, EVER. What it boils down to is that some people just dont like lobster, not in their Mac and cheese anyway...
