I can get Liam to say Mummy by prompting him or pointing to myself - TopicsExpress

I can get Liam to say Mummy by prompting him or pointing to myself and saying whos that. But thats not natural. My aim is to get him to say it off his own back, to come up to me like my girls do and say mummy I want... Etc. Just been playing a game where I was lying on him and pretending to be asleep. He was saying wake up but I wanted him to say mummy wake up or mummy get off me, it didnt take long for him to get it and by the end of it he was saying it independently and frequently! :-) This is an Aba technique weve been taught if anyone has a pre verbal child and wants to try it: 1. Model what you want him to say e.g. Mummy wake up (or if non verbal try something easier like a non verbal gesture or speech sound) 2. Repeat. 3. Prompt him to say it I.e. You say it and he copies. 4. Repeat. 5. Fade the prompt e.g. Say muh he will finish off the sentence mummy wake up 6. Repeat. 7. Wait to see if he says it independently (no prompt), when he does, praise him to high heaven!!! If he doesnt go back to step 5 and 6. 8. Repeat. 9. Repeat. 10. Repeat!!! By then of it you will be crying as hes saying it independently. Then work on transferring this skill into other scenarios I.e. Generalise and make it functional. Aba an effective approach and non intrusive as long as the child is highly motivated in the activity. I was pretending to sleep, then when he woke me up with his words I would shriek and tickle him. He loved the activity! Always make sure Aba is fun! X
