I can recommend The Giver by Lois Lowry. A friend of mine who used to be a teacher recommended it to me and I haven’t been so enthralled in a story in a while. It is a science fiction tale set in what at first seems like a perfect utopia, but it is slowly revealed that things are not quite as perfect as they seemed. The writing is so clever. At first, I grew to love the world and the people, but as the story goes on the reader begins to notice things unsettling and out of place. And then we learn things that turn the world upside-down. They just made a movie of the book, but I loved the book so much that I don’t want to risk spoiling that with a poor adaptation. I’ve started reading the Gathering Blue now, set in the same world. So glad I discovered Lois Lowry!
