I couldnt be happier that we are going to get some help this winter from Lane County. They are joining the city in supporting Egan warming centers and providing space for a 30 person rest stop. This is the beginning of a number of steps forward I believe will come out of the work of the Lane County Poverty and Homeless Board. This is a very action oriented board and I am pleased to serve on it and 4 of the subcommittees. Together we can move toward real solutions to keep people safe, provide housing and ensure the livability of all our communities. Thank you Lane County! The County is supporting the Egan Warming Centers, has committed space for a rest stop for up to thirty temporary dwelling units, is taking an active role in Operation 365 to get veterans into permanent housing, and is looking at strategies to address chronic youth homelessness. Last year showed how harsh our winters can be here in Lane County, said Lane County Administrator Steve Mokrohisky. We are committed to helping those without shelter survive the winter weather by providing safe places for residents to stay warm. Lane County is currently looking at making the Lane County Fairgrounds Wheeler Pavilion and the Serbu Youth Services campus available as overflow for the successful Egan Warming Centers. The Egan Warming Centers provide the homeless with a place to sleep when temperatures drop below freezing during the winter months. In addition, Lane County is working in partnership with the City of Eugene to open a temporary rest stop to provide housing for the homeless near the Lane County Behavioral Health offices on Martin Luther King Boulevard near I-105. This temporary rest stop will accommodate up to thirty people, with active monitoring and management, and will be located near vital services to help address mental health and substance abuse issues. The Board of Commissioners will also be looking at ways to help homeless youth get access to shelter before they are homeless for more than 14 days. After 15 days, homeless youth are more likely to remain homeless for a significant length of time throughout their lives. Homelessness requires the efforts of all of us, from our cities, Lane County, nonprofits and individuals, to work together to address these critical needs, said Mokrohisky. Lane County will continue to look at other areas where we can work with partners to extend the reach of our efforts to address homelessness. ##
