I definitely am happy for all the immigration organizers, - TopicsExpress

I definitely am happy for all the immigration organizers, activists, and mainly the families that have some temporary relief from the executive action POTUS has passed. It means so much to the families who are afraid of being torn apart. Hence, I get that its a win and the jubilation. However, here are my concerns. This executive action also puts us on the same dangerous path that we have seen: the increased militarization and build-up of the border; the incarceration of immigrants that are in detention facilities; the deportation of violent offenders (a policy that resulted in the exacerbation of gangs and organized crime in Latin America). Finally, the policy asks undocumented immigrants to pay taxes, but neglects to mention that undocumented immigrants are underpaid and take the most exploitative jobs because of their vulnerable condition. Now we want to tax them while we also underpay and devalue their labor. I draw attention to these points not to minimize the importance of this victory or the political battle it took for people to get Obama to pass an executive order, but how is it that almost all wins for major issues come within a larger package that reinforces the larger structural issues rather than fixing them. This strategy has been the most recurrent theme.
