I did my first taster session at Manchester Velodrome today. And very thrilling it was again (I have been to a private session previously). There was a good bunch of older guys there and as one was celebrating a birthday, I managed to get a piece of Christmas cake and a shot of whiskey after the session too. Great friendly guys. I spent most of the session riding on my own and at my own pace. I didnt quite get to riding with a group because the first time I tried it, with someone right behind me, I tried to freewheel (which I do a lot in a group) and the bike gave me a good kicking. And a good scare to me and the bloke behind me. I stayed upright tho and carried on, off course. After that I just tracked the strongest group of four riders from a safe distance behind, and when the time came I went past them all. I feel I was the strongest and fastest rider on the day. The only time anyone came past me was when I was either winding down or starting up and not yet trying. Now I am home I am starting to feel it. I rode quite a bit right around and along the top of the banking, which not many others seem to do. It’s the longest way around and probably feels like the most risky part of the track. But as long as you keep pedaling it’s fine. And then you can swoop down the banking as you come out of the corners….now that’s fun. It seemed the thing I like to do the most....how often will I get a chance to ride right up at the top of the banking again? I was only there for an hour but it is well worth the trip to Manchester. It’s great to get going and once you get to a stage where you feel confident and can power round the track, you can really test yourself as an engine. I think I am like a powerful diesel engine. I can get up to a good speed and then maintain this high or steady pace for quite some time. No massive bursts of sprinting but solid hard fast pacing. I just need to get on the track with some real greyhounds that will test me and make me feel my age. But until that happens ……
