I dont know what happened during the voting process, but the Academy has severely thrown a curve ball. While Im over the moon that Grand Budapest has garnered 9 more nominations than I thought it would--considering its March release and the fact that its a Wes Anderson film--and that Birdman has received its due, theres more absence this year than anything else. Lets consider some of the major disappointments: Best Picture: First of all, the Academy is allotted 10 nominations for BP. This year theres 8. Not 9 like in previous years, but 8. As in, there were only 8 quality films deserving of this honor. Heres what couldve filled those slots: Gone Girl, Foxcatcher, Inherent Vice, Interstellar, Wild--even Unbroken, which I personally detested, was considered a lock for a nom. Best Director: Possibly the biggest shock of the entire list is Ava DuVernays absence. Her vision for Selma is miles above the work seen in The Imitation Game, and yet Morten Tyldum is recognized. The same goes for Bennett Miller, the odd one of the bunch, considering the Academy felt his directing was top notch, but not good enough to direct a Best Pic...And wheres David Fincher? The dismissing of Gone Girl in all but one category is one of the two biggest failures. Best Actor: David Oyelowo. Seriously, if it werent for Michael Keatons hail mary of a performance, Oyelowo would be the man to beat. But hes not even being considered. Instead, Bradley Cooper holds that slot. Best Adapted Screenplay: The past 4 months have pretty much seen Gillian Flynn winning for adapting her novel...and then shes snubbed. While Im more than thrilled (and shocked) that PT Anderson is recognized for Inherent Vice, it seems that, once again, American Sniper is the culprit. Best Cinematography: Interstellar. Thats all there is to say. Gone Girl could have, and should have been nominated for 7 Oscars: Picture, Director, Leading Actress, Adapted Screenplay, Editing, Cinematography, and Score. At least Rosamund Pike received recognition for her work, and its ridiculous to think how close it was to being completely shut out. The same goes for Selma--Seriously, only Best Pic and Song? Far more deserving that most of what was released this past year. Now the only thing I can hope for is as many Grand Budapest upsets as possible. This is the worst.
