I don’t normally do much deep thinking this early, but I had an epiphany yesterday that resonates with us all. Many of you may know that the new owner of the Philadelphia Inquirer, and a huge benefactor to my alma mater, Temple University, was killed in a plane crash Saturday night. He was a street kid from Camden, NJ.; fatherless at an early age who exemplified pulling yourself up by your bootstraps. Temple graduate, Dickenson College Law School, extraordinarily successful businessman. He paid back in many public and anonymous ways. What a month of May he had had. Temple’s commencement speaker, he endowed the Temple Medical School, he and Gerry Lenfest won a contentious auction for ownership, heart and soul of the Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News. Saturday he treated three friends to a plane ride and dinner at Pulitzer Press winning historian Doris Kearns Goodwin’s house. Sadly, the story ended on the takeoff coming home. In the volumes of stories this week, I’m struck by a quote from John Wooden that Katz used every day: “You can never live a perfect day without doing something for someone who will never be able to thank you. Pretty cool. End of deep thoughts for this morning. Have a perfect day, everyone!
