I doubt anyone will really read this but this is in response to Michael Savages idiotic notion that Veterans with PTSD are crybabies; Sir (and I use the term very loosely), After having just read your rant, I honestly don’t know how you even have a job as anything as you are clearly brain dead and what my fellow Marines refer to as an oxygen thief. I promised myself that while writing this I would not hurl insults but given the tone of your rant I figured it was only fair as you have insulted our nation’s military. I will however try to keep this factual and not slander anyone. There is a very vast difference between normal depression and PTSD. If you would like to educate yourself instead of voicing your uneducated opinion on a public pulpit, please visit any number of websites available to the public on that topic. Before you dig into that wealth of information, which has been around for years but you must have had your head so far up……..I digress. Okay, back on point. I guess I will break this down Barney style for you. You see there is this thing called medical science and within medical science they make these things called advances. In days gone by they called PTSD by names such as “Soldier’s Heart” (Civil War era) “Shell Shock” WWI, “Battle Fatigue” WWII and Korea, “Delayed Stress Syndrome” Vietnam and a few others here and there. Depression happens to be a symptom of PTSD. Again, you would know this if you cared to learn anything about it. However that isn’t the only part of it. Speaking from actual experience and having many friends and brothers that either make or made their living defending this nation, I can tell you depression is the least of your worries if you suffer from PTSD. In no particular order, nightmares, flashbacks, hypervigilance, hearing or smelling something that takes you back to an event, not sleeping at all, eating too much or too little, and honestly the list goes on. PTSD isn’t about feeling blue or down, and honestly PTSD is a broad term. Would you call a rape victim that suffers from PTSD a “crybaby”? You might given your overall disrespectful tirade but again I will stick to actual facts. Speaking on being raised differently, I come from four generations of Marines before me. Interestingly enough the Marine Corps was never forced upon me, I did it out of a sense of duty to my nation. And to an even greater extend, I do not regret one second of my time in service and miss it every single day, wounds or no wounds. Fighting weakness….may I ask what is weak about having an invisible wound? Oh that’s right, you’re still on that PTSD is made up kick. Off topic, do you also happen to think the Holocaust and moon landings were also fake? Hand holding??? Check??? Okay, so I admit I would love for my hand to be held now that I am single yet again…Check, yep I get one every single month from the VA and guess what? I still live hand to mouth. Are we the only generation to have PTSD? Nope. I do think I did covered that one above but again, with the advancement of medical science it is now identified and treated unlike before which by the way is a huge reason there are so many homeless veterans. They live with PTSD and have never been checked out or treated for it. And speaking of generations, this is an all-volunteer military force. I am guessing at your age but that wasn’t the case in your day. So if we are going to play the man game….your generation ran away to Canada and burned draft cards. Just saying….I am sick too, mostly having read your transcript but whatever. As for celebrating weakness, are you joking? Seriously? Celebration? How about identifying and treating a medical issue. That sounds about right. I am not a doctor but I can read and form thoughts of my own!!! I will clue you in on a little story speaking from my life. I knew something was wrong with me for a long time but I didn’t want to appear weak. Then one day the toughest SOB I ever met who also happened to be a Major at the time, sat me down and said “If you had a broken leg, you’d go to medical right?” Why yes Sir I would. “Then what is different about this other than you can’t see it on your body? Your mind is broken by no real fault of your own, go fix it so you can continue to be the Marine you were and can be again.” Everyone does indeed have depression in their lives. For some it may be that their ratings or face recognition is real low so in their depressed state they decide to become a complete and utter jackass and insult veterans that are sick. Hey, I get it, it happens. Some people are just plain old as………In a case like that maybe that person could say they were sorry. But then there are people that suffer from depression due to PTSD and the depression can be survivors guilt in some cases. In case you don’t know what that is, you have a real good buddy and then suddenly he is killed and you aren’t and you spend most of the rest of your life wondering why a 21 year old man that was your brother in arms will never get to see his sweetheart or Mom or Dad again and yet you get to come home. Sometimes that can make a man feel “blue” and even do a little Boo-hoo-hoo. Boo-hoo-hoo-ing. That leads me to suicide. It most definitely is not the answer to solve any problem but sometimes internal pain can become too much to handle. The fact is that 22 veterans that served this nation honorably in a time of war commit suicide every single day I this country. Many, if not all suffer from PTSD but the number is unknown because despite what you think not all veterans admit to having it because they don’t want to be “weak”. If speaking openly about that bothers you maybe you should go back to the cave. I am guessing cave since you seem to still be living like it was the 1950s and I thought of the Flintstones. Who knows, must be my depression kicking in. Later I could show you how to use the internet. Are you just against medical education or education on the whole? I am curious. I will admit this, our nation is way to over PCed and people are far too overly sensitive. However, there is a difference between a veteran that needs mental help and someone that is offended by looking at a Christmas tree. And touching on your perceived notion that all veterans must be bums, I have never asked for a handout in my life and have gone to bed hungry more than once since returning to civilian life. All this money you think we get, well it is laughable honestly. You make wild assumptions but with no facts to back them up. Now that I think about it, you are the real cry baby here. Walk into a VA hospital sometime or sit in a combat stress group or try to get your benefits, that you earned and paid into changed and then tell me how you feel about all us crybabies. Being laughed at around the world, not even going to touch that one because that is another topic altogether honestly. ISIS defeating our military? Do you even know what is happening? Married, raising children, how does any of that deal with PTSD/depression in the sense you are bringing it up? What I will say about that is it is hard to take care of your family when you can barely take care of yourself, another fun fact about myself. I am a veteran, a man and a father. I am trying to do right by my son and as for fun, I earned a little quit honestly but I am too poor to really have any. Oh, and here is an another fun fact for you. I suffer from PTSD as do many of my “war buddies” yet most of us are still a contributing members of society. You know like a real full time job where it isn’t about our uneducated opinions. We pay taxes and play by the rules and we do all this while people like you dish out your opinions like they were facts. You are entitled to your opinion and I am entitled to mine. Mine are based in fact and yours are the last ditch efforts of an aging has been that has no idea what self-sacrifice or service is even about. So with that said, have a great day covered in the blanket of freedom provided to you by the men and women you dare to insult.
