I finally found an official government link to voice an opinion on this matter. You can add your comment here (Due by July 31st): regulations.gov/#!documentDetail;D=BOEM-2014-0059-0001 Sustainable development is the masterful balance of meeting our own needs without jeopardizing future generations ability to do the same. As a long-time community member of the Outer Banks and the state of North Carolina, I have to voice an opinion on this matter. The amount of outside money brought in from tourism depends on the health and cleanliness of our North Carolina beaches. Tourists travel from VA, DC, NY, NJ, PA, ME, MI, TN, WV, various other parts of the USA, Canada, France, Germany & beyond! We are known for our pristine sandy beaches, shallow sandbars, clean ocean water and laidback lifestyle. People will drive and travel for days rather than going to their closer beaches to experience this sort of beauty. And guess what, they spend at least $1,000 a week just on the rental home, in the area that I lived in at least $2-4,000/week. Then, they support our local economy via restaurants, shops and other activities that are mainly owned by North Carolina locals. Very few other places in the state provide this sort of income for their local economy (not corporate), and bring this kind of revenue to the state as a whole. To say that oil drilling will provide many new jobs as positive PR is ridiculous. This is one of the few places in the state where local jobs are created all of the time by local people. We do not need outside influence on this matter. And certainly not jobs that intentionally destroy our environment and place that we call home. The seismic testing and blasting is extremely harmful to marine life, the endangered right whale and so many other beautiful ocean creatures that are already enduring the nuclear fallout from Fukashima, overfishing, pollution and global warming. To open up another coastline to the dangers of Oil Drilling & Seismic Testing is a very bad idea. Not just for the Atlantic Seaboard, but for our Planet. Lets not think in terms of how much money we will be saving, because none of that will matter when an oil disaster happens and our coastline is left devastated. Florida and Louisiana are still feeling the affects from BPs major oil disaster. Just because the ocean is big, does not make it invincible to man. It is our duty to protect it, not only for our generation or the next, but for the future of mankind. Instead of competing for low oil prices, and progression of the oil industry, lets set the bar for the world. Lets focus on alternative energy and new sustainable practices that will help better our world instead of destroy it. You want to create more jobs? Start by doing yours and protect our treasured coastline. Thank you for your time, Amy Schultz Man belongs to the Earth, Earth does not belong to Man. -unknown You are a perishable item.
